Theatres About to Ban Films Involving Pakistani Actors; Decision Pending

fim association temporarily bans pakistani artists

A week after IMPPA (Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association) resolution to boycott Pakistani talent from Indian films, a new turn comes into picture. Theatres in India have denied showing films involving Pakistani actors.

The thought came over as a result of the action being taken in Pakistan against Indian content. This might be quite worrisome for filmmakers like Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani who have completed their films involving actors from Pakistan.

The members of the Cinema Owners Exhibitors Association of India (COEAI) came united for their decision to boycott such films. Although the final decision has not been taken yet, it will be taken on Friday, October 7 but the members have a strong opinion in this regard.

However, the president of COEAI, Mr. Nitin Datar says that the decision taken would be in a favor of the sentiments of public.

“The members will be meeting on Friday and we’ll decide on the matter. But one thing is for certain – the decision will be taken keeping the wishes and the sentiment of the public. We won’t go against them.”

The president also supports IMPPA’s decision. The Indian Motion Picture Producers Association passed a resolution on September 29, 2016 to ban Pakistani actors and technicians in India till normalcy returns.

Their ban is not applicable on films already completed or those which have started the shoot even if the shoot took place only for one day.

“Yes, I support the IMPPA ban. They are looking at the bigger picture and taking steps for the future.”

Decision Will Be In Accordance With Public

While IMPPA has exempted the completed projects like ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and ‘Raees’ from their recent ban, it is still unsure what decision would be taken by the members of COEAI. What happens if their boycott is the final verdict?

Nitin Datar has not disclosed the specifics yet but they also need to consider the exhibitors deal with distributors.

“I can’t talk about specifics but many factors have to be taken into consideration. See, many exhibitors have already signed the deal with the distributors. So if we decide on a ban, they may even face legal charges from distributors. We need to figure this out.”
