Salman Khan Files Rs. 100 Crore Defamation Case Against News Channel

Superstar Salman Khan has filed a defamation case in the Bombay High Court against a television news channel and has slapped damage of Rs. 100 crore.

Salman was accused for poaching three chinkaras. Two in Bhawad near Jodhpur and the other at Ghoda Farms while shooting for his film Hum Saath Saath Hain in September 1998.

The suit was filed before the High Court in August this year by Salman Khan. It claims that the sting operation conducted by the news channel for chinkara poaching case in 1998 was defamatory and malicious. Salman does not want the channel to release any part of the sting operation in public.

As reported by the Hindustan Times, the sting operation conducted by the news channel claimed that

“Witnesses claimed they saw Khan shoot the endangered chinkaras in Jodhpur”

However, later the “witness/es turned hostile and claimed the video was doctored”

In the previous hearing of this case that took place in High Court on August 24, the channel stated that it had already taken down all the related information of this case, namely the video and script of the sting operation and all the related material from its website.

The hearing in the previous month witnessed submission of affidavits of both the parties, promising that they were working out the settlement.

The case would next be heard on November 18. The matter is presided by Justice SJ Kathawalla.

The actor was also acquitted by the Rajasthan High Court in July 2016 for poaching. In 2006 also, Salman was sentenced for one year for the Bhawad chinkara and for 5 years for the Godha Farms chinkara; in his conviction in the trial courts.

Here Is The Timeline of Events In This Case

September 26, 1998: During the shoot of the film Hum Saath Saath Hain at Bhawad in Mathania near Jodhpur, the actor was accused for shooting two chinkaras. His co-actors in the film Saif Ali Khan, Tabu, Sonali Bendre and Neelam also hunted two blackbucks.

September 28, 1998: Another chinkara was shot by Salman Khan two days later of the earlier event at Ghoda Farms again while shooting for Hum Saath Saath Hai near Jodhpur.

October 2, 1998: Bishnoi community, a religious group in the western Thar Desert and northern states of India, lodged complaint at the police station against the actors and his co-actors for poaching chinkaras and blackbucks.

October 12, 1998: Salman was arrested on their complaint but was granted bail in five days.

April 10, 2006: Under the Wildlife Protection Act, Salman was sentenced for a jail of five years and fined with Rs. 5,000 by the trial court for blackbuck hunting case.

August 24, 2007: On pleading to the session court about the judgement of trial court, session court dismissed the actor’s appeal and upheld the conviction.

August 31, 2007: The actor then knocked the door of Rajasthan High Court. The court suspended the earlier decision but ordered the actor to stay in the country unless taken a formal permission. Salman had already spent six days in Central Jail of Jodhpur before this decision. The High Court later dropped the charges under the Arms Act on the actor’s appeal.

December 2012: The charges applied on Salman Khan were later revised by the Rajasthan High Court. Upon revision, Salman was charged under the Section 9/51 under the Wildlife Protection Act.

August 2013: The conviction charges of the hunt of blackbuck led to denial of the UK visa.

November 13, 2013: On Salman Khan’s appeal again, Rajasthan High Court stayed the sentence of punishment and the actor received the UK visa for shooting.

November 2014: However, Rajasthan government was not pleased by this decision. So, it went to the Supreme Court against the decision of High Court to grant UK visa to Salman Khan.

November 5, 2014: Salman Khan then appealed to the Supreme Court for asking permission for the UK visa since it would affect his shooting schedule. But Justice S.J. Mukhopadhyay and Justice A.K. Goel reserved the order since it was not correct to stay the order only because of the British Visa.

December 19, 2014: Salman Khan pleaded the court for the District Commissioner of Police (DCP) and District Magistrate (DM) of Mumbai city to become his witnesses for the validity of license of the arms which were used by him in the alleged poaching case.

July 25, 2016: Rajasthan High Court acquitted Salman Khan for the 1998 chinkara poaching case.Actor Salman Khan has been acquitted by the Rajasthan High Court in the 1998 chinkara poaching case.
