Om Puri is an Indian origin actor, whose has performed extraordinary not only in Indian cinema but also in mainstream of Pakistani, Hollywood, British, Independent and art cinema. And he has equally received recognitions worldwide. Apart from his achievements in the film industry, Om Puri has also received the fourth highest civilian award of India “Padma Shri”. Moreover, his name is suffixed with OBE “Om Puri OBE”. OBE stands for Order of the British Empire. Puri received this honor of Honorary Officer of OBE in 2004 for his services to the British Film industry.

Personal Life

Om Puri was born to a Punjabi Hindu family on October 18, 1950 in Ambala, Haryana. His father was a railway employee and an Army man. Om Puri is a graduate from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. He also attended the National School of Drama in 1973 where Naseeruddin Shah was his mate.

Om Puri married Nandita Puri in 1993 but they separated in 2013. They have a son Ishaan Puri.

Career

Puri has worked in various Indian films and also those produced in United Kingdom and United States.

Indian Cinema

Om Puri made his debut in 1976 with Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal directed by K. Hariharan and Mani Kaul. The film was based on a Marathi play of the same name. Puri was paid with peanuts for his best work.

His contributions in art films include Bhavni Bhavai in 1980, Sadgati in 1981, Ardh Satya in 1982, Mirch Masala in 1986 and Dharavi in 1992.

Critically acclaimed for unconventional roles, Puri’s such films include Aakrosh (1980), Disco Dancer (1982), Ardh Satya (1982), Maachis (1996), Gupt (1997) and Dhoop (2003).

Puri did a Kannada film A.K.47 in 1999.

Comic roles of Om Puri include Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Chachi 420 (1997), Hera Pheri (2000), Chor Machaye Shor (2002) and Malamaal Weekly (2006).

His more recent Hindi film roles include Singh Is Kinng, Mere Baap Pehle Aap, Billu, Road to Sangam, The Hangman and Don 2.

Hollywood

Puri’ Hollywood films include City of Joy (1992) with Patrick Swayze, Wolf (1994) opposite Jack Nicholson, The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) with Val Kilmer and Charlie Wilson’s War (2007) alongside Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts.

British Cinema

In 1999, Om Puri starred in the highly appreciated British comedy East is East. This was one of the internationally known films of Om Puri along with My Son the Fanatic (1997) and The Parole Officer (2001).

Television

Hindi television serials include Kakkaji Kaheen (1988) as the paan chewing Kakkaji, Mr Yogi (1989) as the ‘Sutradhaar’ who rejoice in pulling protagonist’s leg.

Om Puri has also worked in the second season of horror series Aahat which was aired on Sony channel in 2004 and 2005. Other notable television appearances of Om Puri include include Bharat Ek Khoj, Yatra, Sea Hawks, Antaral.

Puri has also hosted second season of crime show Savdhaan India on Life OK.

In 2014, the actor also appeared in the comedy drama The Hundred-Foot Journey opposite Helen Mirren.

Controversy

On the issue of Uri Attacks held in September 2016 in India, Om Puri insulted Indian Army on IBN7 for the surgical attacks of India against Pakistan. The actor was heavily criticized for his remarks by the Indian media. In another interview with Arnab Goswami on Times Now on October 5, 2016, Om Puri apologized for his remarks.
